Digital Technologies Knowledge and Understanding
- Recognise and explore digital systems (hardware and software components) for a purpose (ACTDIK001) Elaborations - Playing with and using different digital systems for transferring and capturing data, for example using a tablet to take a photograph of a grandparent and recording an interview with them about life in the past - Exploring and using digital systems for downloading and storing information, for example knowing how to download images from a website and inserting them into a document; saving and retrieving data |
Digital Technologies Processes and Production Skills
- Follow, describe and represent a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms) needed to solve simple problems (ACTDIP004) Elaborations - presenting a sequence of instructions or events in a series of slides or screens with text and pictures |
Resource Overview
This resource combines the content descriptors mentioned above to involve students in learning how to take photographs using the camera on an iPad and how to transfer, and upload these photos onto a computer. Students will also be involved in a range of learning experiences where they will learn to sequence and order steps or instructions, with there being a particular focus on sequencing the steps of recipes. The concept is developed that computers, like people, require a sequence of steps to reach an end result, just like cooking a recipe. Students will practice taking and uploading photos to a computer, as well as sequencing the photos into their correct sequence.
The summative assessment task requires students to produce a PowerPoint presentation, outlining the steps required to make bread in a bread maker. Students will make the bread in small groups with the help of the teacher/teacher aide. As students are cooking the bread, they will take photographs of each step involved using the camera on an iPad. Students will upload the photos to a computer, and insert and sequence these into a PowerPoint presentation. Students will then write accompanying steps for each photo in the presentation.

Prior Knowledge/Experience Expectations
Before beginning teaching of this unit of work, it is expected that students will have had prior experience and gained ICT skills to use the features of PowerPoint to create simple presentations. Such features that students are familiar with include: adding slides, changing colours of backgrounds and fonts, changing styles of fonts, adding text boxes, adding images, and maneuvering text and images.
These skills will be revised during the unit, and students will have numerous opportunities to further practice and extend their ICT capabilities.

General Capabilities
The resource uses the following General Capabilities, which are outlined by the Australian Curriculum:
Information Communication Technology (ICT) Capability - Students will use their ICT capabilities to: take photographs using the camera of an iPad; transfer and upload photographs from the iPad onto a computer; and to create PowerPoint presentations.
Literacy - Students will develop literacy skills by: listening to and giving instructions in activities, and developing written sentences for the steps involved with various recipes.
Personal and social capability - Students will use their personal and social capability to work, communicate and learn in group situations and activities.
Intercultural Understanding - Students will develop intercultural understanding by learning about the history and culture of bush bread (damper that is cooked by Indigenous peoples), how it is prepared and eaten.

Cross-curriculum priorities
The resource uses the following Cross-Curriculum Priorities, which are outlined by the Australian Curriculum:
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures - This priority is incorporated into the unit by inviting traditional custodians to share with the class about bush bread - how it is made from crushing a variety of seeds, and sometimes nuts and roots; how it is prepared and cooked in the ashes of a campfire, and how it was eaten during yarning circles. Students are provided with the authentic experience of visiting a culturally significant site, where they are assisted by the traditional custodians, to cook traditional bush bread. As they are cooking it, students take photos on their individual iPads of the various steps involved, which are later sequenced into a PowerPoint presentation task.

Key Ideas
The resource uses the following key ideas, which are outlined by the Australian Curriculum: Technologies:
Computational Thinking - Students will use computational thinking to sequence captured photographs into logical steps. This assists Year 2 students understand that computers, like people, require a sequence of steps to reach an end result, just like cooking a recipe.
Information and Communication Technology in the Australian Curriculum - Students use their ICT skills to take photographs using the camera on an iPad, transferring and saving photographs to a computer, and using PowerPoint to sequence their uploaded photographs into recipe steps.
Design Thinking - Students will think about the design decisions required, in order to creatively present recipes, and how to best design and structure the content of the slides in PowerPoint presentations.
